TROTTING Clove Joins Stable Of J. A. Carmichael

Ulove is the most recent addition to J. A. Carmichael’s Templeton team. Mr R. Hill’s U. Scott mare resumed early last week after a short spell.

Although Ulove has not been off the scene for long it is unlikely she will be one of the stable representatives at the national meeting next month. However, she should be ready for early spring racing. During the current season Ulove was prepared for all her racing by J. S. Dalgety, who only recently decided to restrict his activities as a public trainer. Ulove will begin her six-year-old season with a 2min 15sec assessment. Her five-year-old record included two wins and seven minor placings—all in metropolitan company. Ulove’s victory in the Pacific Handicap last September and six of her placings were gained at Addington Raceway. Her other success was in the two-mile Ranui Handicap at Auckland in May. She was also a minor placegetter at For bury Park during her spring campaign. Ulove’s earnings during the season amounted to £ll9O. Ulove is one of two 2min 15sec class pacers in the Carmichael team at present. The other is Paranova which, together with three of his stablemates, is being prepared for the national meetings. Second Best Parandva was the stable’s second highest stake winner this season. Only the cup-class

pacer, Gay Robin, which is now in America, earned more. Paranova, a four-year-old Garrison Hanover entire, is a capable but unpredictable type. Like many stallions, he seems to have a complex about racing, but his best is very good. Paranova will begin his five-year-old racing with a last-start win on his record. He produced one of his best runs to beat a good field in the Ashburton County Handicap in June. Another win—at Greymouth, earlier in the season—and four minor placings as well brought in £1230 for his Lyttelton owner, Mr W. F. Woolley. Mr Woolley will also be represented at the national meeting by Goldmount This promising Garrison Hanover colts’ record has been marked by consistency. His two wins and nine minor placings in restricted-age and handicap events this season were worth £750. Although there are no 2min 18sec class races at the National meeting, Goldmount will be able to contest the Four-year-old Stakes on the first day. Local John, which won once and gained four minor placings worth £520 when trained by A. J. Bourne for Mrs L. A. Bums and Mr H. Unwin during the spring, will compete in the races for 2min 16sec class pacers at the National meetings. Became Sore Local John was transferred to Carmichael’s stable in the autumn, but had only one race before being put aside because of soreness. Since he has resumed there has been no sign of the trouble recurring.

The stable’s other representative at the National meetings will be La Garrison. Although Mrs M. M. and Mr.G. E. Galletly’s Garrison Hanover gelding has returned to steady training for only about three weeks, he had done plenty of preparatory work and is well forward to begin another campaign.

La Garrison earned £7OO for a first-up second at the National meeting last year

and a win in the Travis Handicap at the New Brighton meeting two starts later. But his form was not up to the same standard in his other eight races before he was put aside during the autumn.

La Garrison is the most tightly assessed pacer in the stable at present. He is on 2min 14sec. Bonny Strathair, a promising Highland Air gelding owned by Mr E. G. Mitchell, of Christchurch, might have his first start in the new season at the Kurow meeting at Oamaru on August 13. Bonny Strathair, which had his first race at Washdyke in May, shaped well at his second attempt to finish third among the maiden trotters at Ashburton early last month.
