ELECTION OF MR G. DON

Waimairi Seat Filled Mr G. G. Don is the new Waimairi County Council member for the Belfast riding. In a well-contested byelection, he defeated Mr A. W. Johns by 525 votes to 382 on the preliminary count. About 57 per cent of the electors voted, a figure regarded by the returning officer (Mr K. Maclachlan) as support for his. belief that, more people vote during the week than at a Saturday poll. A total of 907 votes was cast on Wednesday, compared with 800 at the county elections on a Saturday in October. A total of 1396 votes was possible. There are 49 sets of special voting papers to be counted, but these cannot affect the result
