POLLUTION REPORT PRAISED BY LABOUR
Support for the remedial actions proposed in the report of the Regional Air Pollution Research Committee
on Christchurch air pollution and congratulations to the committee on its report, have been expressed by the Christchurch Labour Representation Committee on behalf of Labour Party branches. The Labour Party planned that the Air Pollution Act be re-examined in relation to areas and industries with special air pollution problems, and locally Labour candidates for the council would continue to publicise air pollution problems, the Labour Representation committee said in a statement. “The data indicating that smoke and sulphur dioxide disperse twice as slowly in the Christchurch atmosphere as in London emphasises the need for positive action to reduce sources of pollution. The statement that until recently low sulphur fuels have been used in the home causes concern, and fuel suppliers are asked why there has been a change of policy. “The committee calls on all members and supporters to back up the research committee report with supporting action. Keep Christchurch a garden city.”
