TOP SKIERS IN TITLE RACES

All of Canterbury’s top ski racers will be competing in the provincial individual championships at the week-end and the standard of performance should be high.

M. Gardner (Amuri) and Miss K. Guy (N.C.S.C.) will be favoured to win and Miss Guy will have to fall to be beaten on her form last week-end when she finished tenth in the combined Stamers Smith Memorial giant slalom. However, Gardner cannot be certain of success. Well as he skied in the Broken River giant slalom, he will compete against four racers who have represented New Zealand and will have to go flat out to win, P. Willis, G. Nevell and M. Dennis all represented New Zealand against Australia last year, while J. Willis had done so previously. They will be hard to beat. C. Womersley skied well last week-end, while G. McFadden and R. Cullen both gave a good account of themselves. The two younger skiers, R. Poulson and D. Stewart, will both be trying to improve their reputations in senior company. Gardner was the surprise winner of the Canterbury title last year when the championships were the first major races of the season. He will be attempting to win two in

succession and has every prospect of doing so.' Miss Guy’s chief competition will come from Misses V. Christie, J. Flower and H. Preston. Miss Preston, a first year racer who recently moved to Christchurch from Waikoujaiti, is the most likely of these three.
