Christchurch Railway Station

Sir,—Recently Mr McAlpine confirmed that the Christchurch Railway Station boilers were to be converted from coal to oil fuel. This is contrary to the policy of the inter-departmental committee on fuel and power. Mr McAlpine justified the change on cost grounds and ignored the national interest. Yet a year or so ago the Health Department converted the boilers at St. Helen’s Hospital from oil to gas fuel. Gas is more costly than oil but the change was justified as being in the national interest. 1 have many times protested the lack of a national fuel policy, but never did I expect to read that the Government’s confusion over this matter is so deep-rooted that there is neither the direction nor the co-ordination to achieve even an inter-depart-mental consistency in fuel usage.—Yours, etc., JOHN POLLARD.

July 14, 1966. [The Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) replies: “The question of the type of fuel to be used at the Christchurch station is to be looked into again by the inter-depart-mental Fuel and Power Committee, and it would not be appropriate for me to comment at this stage.”]
