Driving Licences
Sir,- —why should a senior citizen be penalised? At 70 years, and thereafter, he is compelled to pay 15s for a health certificate from his doctor, plus 5s for a driving licence. The charge seems unfair to me.—Yours, etc., RETIRED. July 19, 1966. [The Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) replies: “While many drivers over the age of 70 years are extremely careful, many people slow down in their perceptions, reactions, and movements to such an extent that they could constitute a real danger to themselves as well as others under modern traffic conditions. It is considered that there is no better way of checking this deterioration, which is sometimes rapid, than by a medical test and a practical driving test.”]
