Trout In Avon Many of the trout brought from the Selwyn river and released in the Avon near Armagh street had spawned, the chairman of the fish committee of the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society (Mr G. Ferris) said yesterday. The spawning place could clearly be seen about 20 yards above the Armagh street bridge, Mr Ferris said. The society was delighted that the results had been so satisfactory. About three-quarters of the eggs were expected to hatch. The young would take about two years to grow to a takeable size. Education Nassella was fairly widely spread throughout Canterbury, and the board could well consider allowing its staff to address young farmers’ club meetings outside its district, said tne fields superintendent of the Department of Agriculture (Mr A. R. Dingwall) at a North Canterbury Nassella Tussock Board meeting yesterday. Members agreed that it made sense to educate “the next generation of farmers.” Army Recruiting Army recruiting in the Southern Military District increased by 140 per cent in the quarter which ended in June, compared with the same period last year. Between April and June, 72 men enlisted, compared with 30 during the same period in 1965. The district recruiting officer (Major V. Vaney) said he thought the Army’s new rates of pay and reduction of the age limit had helped the recruiting campaign. He also felt that young New Zealanders were becoming much more aware of the country’s defence commitments overseas and of the need to maintain them.
