Permanent Closure Of Amuri Hospital

The permanent closing of Amuri County Hospital on < March 31 next year is to be sought by the North Canterbury Hospital Board. It will seek authority to do so from the Hospitals Advisory Council and the Minister of Health (Mr McKay). The hospital has not been used for several years. The Amuri County Council, which had asked the board to defer its decision for another 12 months, will be advised of the board's intention. “Should any local organisation be interested in acquiring the building it has until April next to do so,” said the institution’s committee report.

The committee said all the circumstances bad been taken into account, and no justification could be seen at this stage for the re-establishment of a hospital in the area. The Amuri County Council had mentioned to the board, among other possibilities, a suggestion that an organisation from Amuri could be interested in taking the building over, as a convalescent home for older residents. The board had also been advised that the present doc-

tor at Rotherham did not intend to relinquish his practice in the meantime.
