Table Tennis Lead Almost Unbeatable

The four top teams in the Christchurch senior table tennis inter-dub competition al! gained comfortable wins during the twelfth round of matches played last evening.

Selwyn placed itself in an almost impregnable position by defeating Linwood and will now need to lose both matches in the final two rounds to miss winning the championship. V. N. Brightwell and H. P Holt both won all their singles matches but Holt was lucky to beat N. C. Orr who always seems to just lose three-game struggles. Wallabies Red was a man short—N. B. Radford injured an ankle during the afternoon—and gave Avonside an easy victory. Avonside remains three

points behind Selwyn and is now the only team with a chance of overhauling Sclwyn. As expected. Wallabies Green proved too strong for Celtic, G. R. Saunders winning all his singles. However, M. R. Spinks was in poor form. B. T. Edwards was the only Celtic player to display good form. Eagles overwhelmed a University team without B. Prendergast, and J. Armstrong returned to something like his best form to crush C. W. C. Tilby. Armstrong won all three singles while D. J. Kalin and Mrs M. J. Shadbolt won two each and University never looked like coping. Competition points after 12 rounds are:—Selwyn 31, Avonside 18, Eagles 18. Wallabies Green 14. Celtic 8. Linwood S. Wallabies Red 7.
