‘UNMATCHED RECORD’

Work By Red Cross Of all the humanitarian organisations in the world, none were doing as much as the Red Cross, the Dominion chairman of the society (the Rev. Father G. V. Daly) told the annual meeting of the North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society yesterday. No similar organisation could match the society’s record over the last 100 years, he said. The president (Mrs R. I. Brake) expressed concern at the branch’s slow membership growth. To remedy the situation, she suggested that members’ husbands be invited to join. Mr A. L. B. Ross said that with the expansion of the work, such as Civil Defence, it was vital to have a stronger membership.

The officers elected were: President, Mrs R. I. Brake; vice-presidents, Mesdames J. B. Hay, D. J. Wales and Miss M. C. Bain; chairman, Mr E. W. Reeves; treasurer, Mr J. W. Huggins; medical adviser, Dr. J. L. Will; medical officer, Dr. J. R. Dawson; executive Mesdames A. D. Allan, G. Anderson, C. H. Bethell, A. P. Boyle, W. D. Bunt, K. W. R. Hosking, T. C. Maling, A. H. Weir, H. Wright, Mr W. A. Hearn and Dr. J. R. Dawson. Increased Activity

Increased activity in all sections was noted by Mrs Brake in the centre’s annual report. “For the coming year the society is committed to large projects for assistance to the people of the Pacific region, and for future development under the League of Red Cross Societies,” says Mrs Brake. Sub-centre reports showed a membership of 5803, an increase of 203 over last year’s figures, while Junior Red Cross membership, at 3283, had risen by 218.
