NO SOVIET MOVE
(N.Z.PA. Reuter—Copyright) TOKYO, July 27. The visiting Soviet Foreign Minister, Mr Andrei Gromyko, said in Tokyo today the Soviet Union had no intention of taking the initiative in convening a conference for a peaceful settlement of the Vietnam war, a Japanese Government spokesman reported.
The Soviet Union was not directly involved in the war and would not at-
tend such a conference, even if it were held, Mr Gromyko declared. He was speaking when he met the Japanese Prime Minister, Mr Eisaku Sato, for about 90 minutes at the Prime Minister’s official residence this morning, the spokesman said. Mr Sato stressed it was an urgent necessity to stop fighting in Vietnam and the nations concerned should come to the conference table.
