The Union Jack
Sir, —Mr Walsh, member for Tauranga, is reported to have said that “the days of the Union Jack are gone.” That is a statement from a member of the Tory Government that is a disgrace to and an indictment of the whole party. If Sir Winston Churchill were still Premier of Britain, would he have made such a statement? He says “the days of the British Empire are gone,” a statement we would expect from Communists. Britain is fighting desperately to keep above water, but the representatives of this Government are demanding their pound of flesh. We are British to the core. Would they like to see the Japanese flag floating around our public buildings? Mr Walsh apparently is no lover of our beloved flag. We love New Zealand and Britain.—Yours, etc., R. DAVIS. July 25, 1966.
