Armalite Rifle
Sir, —“W.J.E.” refers to the agreement in the Geneva Convention: “that military rifle ammunition be so designed as to make a clean wound, and so not cause any unnecessary suifering.” Under the stress of warfare, belligerents observe such clauses only when it suits them. The use of poison gas at Ypres in 1915 was a deliberate contravention of the Hague Convention of 1908. When Great Britain brought the Indian 2nd Secunderabad Calvary Brigade into action near Bethune in France in September, 1914, she was the first country in the world to violate her solemn treaty obligations never to bring black troops to fight in Europe. Those people who still imagine that soldiers can defend dr save them from communism must share the responsibilities for such actions and the tortures and violations of modern warfare.—Yours, etc., SETH NEWELL.
