Games Bid Good wishes to the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) as leader of the delegation to Jamaica seeking the British Empire and Commonwealth Games for Christchurch were expressed by the City Council last evening. “If you succeed in getting the games, we are all going to be very busy people," said Cr. H. P. Smith, the Deputy-Mayor. “If enthusiasm means anything, you are the right man to lead a team of dedicated men," Cr. N. G. Pickering said. Youth Forum A youth forum would be held in Christchurch later this year, said the Canterbury Youth Activities officer (Mr L. J. Coughlan) yesterday. He said that the sub-committee of the Canterbury Youth Council was working on the scheme, and a date would be fixed soon. All organisations and individuals who were interested in the forum would be notified soon. Wet Day A fresh south-west wind brought light showers to Christchurch yesterday. The weather was overcast and cold. Temperatures remained steady, and a maximum temperature of 46 degrees was recorded at Harewood at noon. The temperature at Harewood at 6 a.m. was 43 degrees. By 9 a.m. it was 44 degrees. At 3 p.m. at the Botanic Gardens, and at Harewood the temperature was 45 degrees. A reading of 47 degrees was shown on the Government Life building gauge at 4.30 p.m. “Jungle Doctor” Dr. Paul White, the Australian author of the “Jungle Doctor” books, will officially open the new two-storey school block of the Middleton Grange School's secondary department on October 29. The new classroom block is the first stage of the school’s secondary department expansion programme. Rugby Traffic The Transport Department in Christchurch is happy over the behaviour of motorists who travelled to the first Lions-All Black test at Dunedin on Saturday. The Chief Traffic Officer (Mr A. Goldsmith) said he had no complaints from his officers. “We hope that motorists will be as well behaved for the games at Lancaster Park with the Lions.” Mr Goldsmith said his department expected a big movement by road to Lancaster Park from throughout Canterbury on Saturday. Leander Reunion Almost 200 members of the Ex-Leander Association met for their annual reunion at Auckland last Saturday evening. The function is always held as near as possible to July 13, which is the anniversary of the action in which the Leander was severely damaged by Japanese torpedoes, causing the loss of 28 men, in the battle of Kula Gulf in 1943. Control Of Dogs An improved type of sign prohibiting dogs in shopping areas unless on a leash was authorised by the City Council last evening, after it had been told that only 67 signs were now displayed from a total of 236 required. Westport Milk Milk will be delivered in Westport by motor transport today for the first time in 29 years. The new contractor U Mr J. Macauley, who. arrived from Scotland in January. He will be helped by Mrs Macauley.— (F.0.0.R.) Fish Counter An electrical barrier across the Tongariro river at Birch Pool should be completed in about six weeks, according to the Rotorua Conservator of Wildlife (Mr P. J. Burstall). When in use it would divert fish into a chamber and automatically count them before allowing them to continue upstream, Mr Burstall said. The device had been designed by the Electricity Department.
