MIAMI BEACH, July 17. An 18*year*old Swedish photo* grapher’s model, blue-eyed Margareta Arvidsson, of Gothenburg, was crowned “Miss Universe 1966” last night—and immediately threatened to abdicate.
“I won’t go through with it. I wanted my friend ‘Miss Finland’ to win,” she cried.
But after the first burst of emotion, the reluctant beauty added: “Perhaps it may not be as bad as I think it is.” Miss Arvidsson was selected as the most beautiful girl in the world from among 58 competitors after an exhausting week of parades, press conferences, rehearsals and pageantry. Miss Arvidsson, the second “Miss Sweden” to win the title, said her ambition was to be a bare-back rider in a circus. She is sft Sin and her measurements are 35-25-34. The runners-up were “Miss Finland,” Satu Chariota Ostring, and “Miss Thailand,” Chernand Savetanand, “Miss India,” Yasmin Daji, and
“Miss Israel," Aviva Israeli, were fourth and fifth. “Miss Sweden” was crowned by “Miss Universe 1965,” Apasra Honsakula of Thailand. I She is a typical Nordic i beauty except that her hair is several shades darker than the traditional blonde. Miss Arvidsson is the daughter of a sea captain. Her work as a photographer’s model has brought her extensive travel all over Europe, the Persian Gulf and South America. Her selection as the most beautiful girl in the world, brings a 10,000 dollar cash prize and a guaranteed 10,000 dollar personal appearances contract Count Sigvard Bernadotte, son of the King of Sweden, who was one of the competition’s judges, said: “I couldn’t be more pleased with the result”
