More Cargo Handled
Of New Zealand’s ports, Whangarei, Auckland, Wellington and Lyttelton handled the most tonnage in the first three months of this year, according to the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). However, the bulk of the 1,331,000 tons handled at Whangarei was oil and its products pumped from and to tankers at the new refinery. Auckland was next with 982,000 tons, followed by Wellington with 747,000 tons and Lyttelton with 452,000 tons. An increase of 865,000 tons of cargo was handled at all New Zealand ports during this period compared with the first three months of last year. Contributing most to this increase were substantial rises in tonnage for oil (1,419,000 tons to 1,866,000 tons) and fertilisers (354,000 tons to 497,000 tons). Analysing the increase by direction of shipping, there were rises of 321,000 .tons in inward overseas cargo, 299,000 tons in coastal cargo, 237,000 tons in outward coastal cargo and 8000 tons in outward overseas cargo.
