Checkers, Rex A, Lead Indoor Basketball

Checkers and Rex A, with 14 points each, still lead the Canterbury Women's Indoor Basketball Association's senior competition with only one more series of games to be played. All the leading teams won when matches were played at Cowles Stadium last evening. Results of games:— Rex A 28, Teachers' College 8. Brighton A 42, Rangier* IT. 'Varsity 34, Stars 8. T Checkers 34, Y Girls 7. Rebels a bye. University v. Stars University continued to show an improvement In its team play and completely outclassed the Stars side. Fine defensive play in which G. McGregor and J. Goulden figured prominently kept the Stars shots at goal to a minimum, and Stars were unable to net more than one goal in the first half. Some fine passing movements on attack put P. Sullivan and S. Taylor tn good scoring positions and G. McGregor netted some good shots from her centre position at the top of the keyhole. After leading 21-2 at halftime University's play lapsed and many long passes went astray. Only determined guarding and fine Interceptions by P. Sullivan kept It in control. Star's burst of energy was short lived and University assumed control with a burst of scoring by Sullivan and Goulden to record a good win. Top scorers: P. Sullivan 12, G. McGregor 9. Checkers v. Y Girl* In an uninspiring game, notable for the long period in the first half when neither team could score, Checkers beat Y Girls. Although scoring Immediately from the outset of play, Checkers was unable to repeat Its success and too many shots were well off the ring. After leading narrowly. Checkers was forced to exert every effort when shots by M. Neiman and J. Partridge put Y Girl* into the lead. A successful penalty shot by J. Baker put Checkers ahead again and it slowly Increased this. Top scorers: J. Baker 9, 8. Chamberlain 8. Brighton v. Ranglora In the highest scoring game of the evening Brighton accounted , for Ranglora after a fast, open display. With S. Norman and A. Bollee in fine form under the basket, Brighton's score mounted rapidly. H. Hutton and P. Millar worked hard under both basket* to give their team ample possession and with a feast of the ball, and the key-

hoi* kept wide open, there was plenty of room for the forward*. For Ranglora C. Reuben* and J. Taylor worked tlreleeily. Top. scorers: S. Norman 18, A. Bollee 14; Ranglora, V. Lynskey t. Rex v. College The greater experience of the Rex players, who were capably led by J. Taylor, proved the deciding factor in their match against Teachers' College. College played with youthful enthusiasm but wa* unable to match the more competent attacking play of the Rex team. Their tendency to dribble to the sideline and constant use of a high overhead pass, lost them possession repeatedly and Rex were quick to capitalise on these deficiencies. Taylor and V. Young netted some good goals for their side. Top scorers: J. Taylor 12, V. Young 8. Lower grade results:—Stars B 2, University B 0; Rockets -18, Taxes B 4; Rebels B 9, Rex 6: Masons 29, Taxes A 16; Orients 30, Rogues 2; Burnham 20, Deaf Club 12; Training College 29, Shoga 4; Shoga 14, Brighton 14; Wigram 23, Brighton 12; Rex 9, Ranglora 9.
