TROTTING To Make Mile Record Bid This Week

The brilliant young trotter, Westland King, will attempt to create a new mile Australian and New Zealand record for a two-year-old at Addington Raceway on Wednesday at 1230 pjn.

The present record of 2.7 4-5 was established a little more than 12 months ago by Dolwyn Dancer at Wayville in Adelaide.

Arrangements for the time trial were completed at Rangiora Raceway on Saturday by the president of the New Zealand Trotting Conference (Mr A. J. Nicoll), of Ashburton.

The three Christchurch trotting clubs have agreed that they will pay £250 if Westland King succeeds in creating a new record. Westland King, by Goodland from Whitehaven, is trained at West Melton by J. D. Litten for Mr P. K. Ryder, of Kaiapoi. He established a New Zealand mile record of 2min 12 l-ssec in adverse conditions at Addington Raceway last month. The previous best was 2min 13 l-ssec returned by Au Fait in 1957. The world record for one

mile is Imin 58 3-ssec recorded by the filly, Impish, in 196 L The conference has arranged that the time trial on Wednesday conforms with all regulations laid down overseas. There will be three timekeepers and the horse

will be swabbed before and after his run.

Stipendiary stewards will supervise the attempt to make certain that at no stage

of the trial does the galloping pacemaker head Westland King. Westland King gained the easiest of wins in the Two-year-old Trotters’ Trial over 10 furlongs at Rangiora on Saturday. He paced and trotted unevenly for two furlongs, losing seven or eight seconds.

From then on he gradually made up ground and drew away from his rivals in the I straight to win by a wide margin from Markalan, which was clear of Wire Wound. Then, after a shorter break, came Magic Time, Pressano and Laplander. Westland King’s official time for the 10 furlongs was 2min 56sec. He was privately timed to trot his last mile in about 2min 16sec, an outstanding run on a soft, grass track.
