TROTTING Newport Maid Will Test Sprinters

If Newport Maid has held the form which gave her a decisive victory in the Queen’s Birthday Stakes at Ashburton last Monday week she should take beating again in the Archer Memorial Handicap at Rangiora today.

On the strength of her most recent performance Mrs A. V. Kingsland’s Newport Chief filly is almost certain to be a warm favourite in this sprint event for 2-18 class pacers at the Rangiora Trotting Club’s winter meeting.

Newport Maid will be driven by her Templeton trainer, W. R. Butt. His stable will also be represented by Angel Lass which, on form, looks to be a fairly weak link in the bracket. One of the hardest for Newport Maid to beat might be Student. This consistent Smokey Hanover four-year-oid has won two races this season for his Belfast ownertrainer, C. S. Donald. His most recent victory was over a sprint distance at Hutt Park in April. Meantime, he has been placed in each of his five races, and two of those placings were seconds in sprint events at Nelson last week-end.

If Queen’s Birthday Stakes form is going to prove valuable, Goldmount’s chance of, at least, reaching a place must be rated fairly high. He was soundly beaten in the Ashburton event, but made ground near the end for fourth and had a number of well-performed three-year-olds behind him at the finish. The recent form of the others off the limit is not impressive, but if Happy Wanderer, which went soundly for

fifth over two miles at Ashburton the last time she raced, and Lauder Way, an unreliable but Speedy pacer, produced one of their peak runs, they could add interest to the finish.

The only last-start winner in the field is Winfield Chief, Student’s conqueror at Nelson last Tuesday. He could go well again but would need plenty of luck in the running to succeed from 24 yards in a capacity field. Why Not and Lustre Scott are a fancied combination for the T.A.B. double, which will be run on the Rangiora Winter Cup and the Eyreton Handicap. Most opposition for Why Not in the first leg is generally expected to come from Soldier Gal and Epona. Lustre Scott’s strongest rivals might be Wight and Overtime.

The double for course patrons only will be run on the Waikuku and First Sefton Handicaps. Mon Amie and Country John could be the successful combination. The .forecast is for continued fine weather. The track should provide good winter going.
