TRAVEL-AWARD WINNER

The Travel Enterprise Award of the New Zealand Travel and Holidays Association has this year been won by the city of Napier. This was announced on the opening day of the association’s conference in Christchurch yesterday by the president of the association (Mr J. L. Chapman), and the framed award was presented, as is

shown in the photograph above, by the Minister of Tourism (Mr Eyre) to the Deputy-Mayor of Napier (Cr. P. D. Cox). Mr Chapman said the award was for the area making a major contribution to the development of the , New Zealand tourist industry, ’ and the city of Napier provided a wide range of ameni- ’ ties for tourists, and was a • tourist-minded city. Replying, Mr Cox said many I organisations in Napier had > helped to provide amenities

which were proving attractions, for instance, the new Marineland, which had been visited by more than 295,000 persons in six months. His council had always taken a great interest in tourism, and encouraged the provision of amenities for visitors. There had been setbacks: the Building Programmer had refused permission for a 30-b :d hotel project and an 80-bed motel project yet, strangely, had given permission for a £50,000 tavern. It seemed to him the Build-

ing Programmer should “get with it,” he said. The convention was declared open by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning). He welcomed visitors to Christchurch, and told the 375 delegates they were working for a very important industry, and one with a great future. Mr Manning was presented with a long-playing record. The president of the South Island Publicity Association (Mr H. P. Smtih) also welcomed the visitors.
