Penalties For Rape
Sir, —A petition seeking increased penalties for rape has been presented to Parliament. No sane person would deny that rapists must be punished severely, but would not a petition naming the real rapists be more in order? How long can a society cry ‘Rape” when it panders to a system (a profit system) that allows for nudity and suggestion in films, magazines, books, and newspapers? It is one thing
to advertise provocatively to gain money; it is another to ask what effect such advertisements have on some people; what effect the wearer hopes the article will produce, from short skirts to bikinis. How naive can you get? Call me narrow-minded if you must, but, please, who is the rapist? What moral right have some women to scream “Rape” when they allow their sex to be so exploited—for money. In the case for rape, who is on trial?—Yours, etc., PETER MITCHELL. June 16, 1966.
