Kumai Schools Well At Wingatui

Kumal managed a sound workout for his engagement in the Burnside Hack Steeplechase at Oamaru on Tuesday when he schooled brilliantly and emerged from a solid trial when ridden by his race jockey, B .J. Anderton, at Wingatui yesterday. Accompanied by his stablemate, McGregor (M. Parr) Kumal warmed up with a round on the flat before schooling over a round of the steeplechase fences.

He outjumped his companion over the first fence and from there was on terms. They were then paired over a round of solid pacework. Both horses managed it in splendid style. Work was delayed for a time by a sharp frost. The plough and inside grass were both in good order. Glenmorven (M. J. Skelton) and Balken Boy (P. J. Silver) worked exceptionally well over five furlongs on the plough. They jumped out smartly running the first two furlongs in 25sec and came home together at the end of five furlongs in Imin 4sec. Banerva, which surprised by finishing fast for third place in the Tainui Improvers’ on the last day of the Dunedin meeting, appears to have done well in the meantime. He was let off with a round of pacework.
