Oamaru Candidates In Fast Mile

Riccarton hopes for success at Oamaru next Tuesday should rest mainly with its hack stayers and its sprinters.

Sabell and Dark Seaman are competent sprinters in the Grange Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double, and Hawkins and Tsunami should match the best of the Southerners in the Waikaura Hack Handicap.

Tsunami Impressed in a mile gallop with the Oamaru Winter Cup candidate, White Rajah, on the No. 1 grass at Riccarton yesterday. After a frost they had firm footing and ran their mile strongly in Imin 43-3/ssec, the last half taking only 50Tsunami was ridden by G. Guilery and D. Tucker rode White Rajah. N. Eastwood will come south to ride White Rajab at Oamaru. Easy Trial Hawkins was not called on for great speed over a mile yesterday. He started at a leisurely pace with Lucky Crown and Pawnee and there was no marked quickening until about half-way through the gallop. After running the mile in Imin 49sec, the last half in 51- Hawkins and Lucky Crown were on terms, a length in front of Pawnee. Hawkins was ridden by his race rider, D. N. Hadfield. Apache worked with marked keenness to beat Sabell by two lengths over

six furlongs in Imin 16sec, the last half-mile in 50-l/ssec. Sabell stayed with Apache until well into the straight, and was not ridden out when the latter started to go ahead. Skye, with a disadvantage in the weights, also started with them, and finished a length behind Sabell. Summer Lad (Guilery) completed his work with a keenly-run half-mile. He recorded 50-2/5 sec. Time and Tide and Natter were equally impressive in solo sprints under good weights later in the morning. Each recorded 50-3/ssec. B. Collins rode Time and Tide and N. Cowles rode Natter. Solid Pace M. J. Wadley’s pair, Butesail Blue (E. G. Low) and Mushtara (M. McCann) were paired over seven furlongs, and maintained a solid pace to run the last half-mile in 50-3/ssec and the final three furlongs in 38sec. Dowmanca (B. Collins) recorded 39 for three furlongs. She is in the Farewell Hack Handicap at Oamaru. Kalimera (Edens) sprinted

three furlongs keenly in 37-2/ssec. G. S. Barr returned this good galloper to training recently and is preparing her for the Winter Cup. William David, which is in the steeplechase at Oamaru, fell on landing at the third fence after being checked in a round of the trial fences with Lovely Clover (K. Quayle). Lovely Clover jumped across William David from the Outside, but the Reversal gelding and his rider, A. Swanson, escaped injury. Swanson remounted and took William David with Lovely Clover to jump the double and the boards.

Gunga Da (Swanson) spoilt a competent round of the fences by ducking outside the second of the double. He was taken back to jump the double, and this time gave no trouble.

Gallantry (R. A. Williams) finished a run of eight hurdles with a spectacular leap at the last flight. He started slowly, but was up to a good pace for the second round.
