Travel Convention In City Today

About 75 delegates from all over New Zealand will attend the travel convention of the New Zealand Travel and Holidays Association, which begins in Christchurch today. The conference will be opened at the Civic Theatre this afternoon, and those present will include the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning), the president of the South Island Publicity Association (Mr EL P. Smith) and the Minister in charge of Tourism (Mr Eyre). Mr Eyre will speak at the opening. There will be a cocktail party this evening, and tomorrow morning the president of the association (Mr J. L. Chapman) will present his address to the first business session of the convention. The same morning the convention will be addressed by the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake), and there will be further business sessions in the afternoon, followed by a in the

evening. In the afternoon an address on financing the tourist industry will be given by Mr J. Newman. On Sunday morning Mr J. W. Thompson will speak on public relations and membership, and after lunch the chairman of Air New Zealand (Mr G. N. Roberts) will give an address. The convention will end on Sunday evening, and most delegates will leave Christchurch on Monday. The New Zealand Travel and Holiday Association works in close liaison with the Tourist and Publicity Department and is, by statute, official adviser to the Government on tourist matters. It was incorporated in 1953 as a non-profit-making society to promote the full development of tourism in New Zealand. The association has 23 branches throughout New Zealand, and publishes the quarterly magazine “New Zealand Holiday,” which is sent to selected readers throughout the world. /a
