LIONS LOOK AT LINE-OUT PLAY

[From Our Rugby Reporter] TIMARU. Close attention was paid to line-out play when the Lions had their training run at Fraser Park yesterday. D. Thomas, the tall Welsh forward, and B. E. V. Price, the other Welsh lock, alternated at No. 3, with Thomas doing most of the jumping there.

However, it was noticeable that the fast and flat throw to No. 3 was not used much. This was one of the main weapons used by Southland to upset the high jumping of the British Isles forwards.

The coach (Mr J. D. Robins) did not put the players through very strenuous physical exercises. Instead, he spent a lot of time talking with the team for Wednesday, with apparently most of the discussion centering on lineout technique and protection for the half-back. S. J. Watkins, who injured a hamstring at Invercargill, had a light training run without showing any ill effects, but he did not try to stretch out K. F. Savage, the other injured wing, did not train. But it was surprising to see Watkins, who is not playing, throwing the ball in the match team’s line-out practice.

The back-line, which has five changes from the one that played against Southland, moved quite well and looked a very competent combination. C. H. M. Gibson, who will have his first game, spent some time practising up and unden and it seems that the British Isles might start to use this form of play—even if only in self defence. B. Bresnihan, who also will have his first match, looked a very sharp runner. The teams for Tuesday are: Lions.—D. Rutherford; A. J. W. Hineheiwood, C. W. McFadyean; B. Bresnihan, M. P. Weston; C. M. F. Gibson; R. M. Young; A. I. E. Pask (captain); D. Grant, R. A. Lamont, B. E. V. Price, W. D. Thomas; D. L. Powell, D. Williams, F. A. Laidlaw. Combined.—A. Smith (M.C.), B. Teen (S.C.), I. S. T. Smith (N. 0. captain), B. Sampson (M.C.), J. Sampson (M.C.), A. Farrell (M.C.), K. McGregor (N. 0. M. Hanham (M.C.), R. Vercoe (S.C.), R. Dench (S.C.), M. Foley (S.C.), N. Moffat (S.C.), K. Milne (S.C.), D. Grant (N. 0.
