DEFECTS IN ENVELOPES
“Mail Was Not Opened”
Complaints by members of the Centra] Canterbury Electric Power Board at their April meeting that their meeting papers appeared to have been opened in the mail had been traced to a weakness in the foolscap envelopes used, said the board’s secre-tary-manager (Mr V. G. Mason).
Mr Mason said the board had asked the Post Office to make inquiries, but had since found the weakness in the envelopes, which, in some cases, had actually shown signs of tearing before use. He had then told the Post Office that there was no need for further inquiry. Mr Mason said he had received from the Chief Postmaster (Mr M. E. Wilson) a letter stating that there was no evidence to show that the envelopes had been deliberately opened. There was little doubt that the damage occurred in normal handling because of the weakness of the envelopes.
