DAMAGES IN DIVORCE
Co-Respondent To Pay £5OO
A settlement of a claim for £2500 damages against a woman co-respondent in a divorce suit was announced in the Supreme Court yesterday, and jurors waiting to try the case were discharged. Mr Justice Macarthur, in granting Valerie Bell (Mr G S. Brockett) a decree nisi in divorce against her husband. Robert Renton Bell, a retired dental surgeon (Mr C. B. Atkinson) on the ground of his adultery with Jean Mary Bell, a nurse (having changed her name from Turnbull by deed poll), approved the parties’ settlement of £5OO damages, and £250 in costs.
His Honour entered judgment for the £5OO damages against Miss Bell (Mr B. McClelland), this being associated with a settlement of property and maintenance matters approved by his Honour. Mrs Bell’s petition for divorce was not defended. Her evidence of her husband’s adultery was supported by Shirley William Cunningham, an investigator.
