CONTROL OF OPOSSUMS
Govt’s Failure To Legislate
(N.Z. Press Association)
NELSON, June 2.
Criticism of the Government’s failure to introduce legislation making it mandatary for opossum destruction be undertaken by rabbit boards was heard at the annual conference of the Catchment Authorities’ Association today. Mr P. M. Reynolds (Poverty Bay) said he had heard a number of terms used to describe the Government’s inaction over the legislation which had been promised. Mr Reynolds said he would prefer not to use these terms. He would be content to say the Government had been indecisive in its dealing with this matter.
The conference carried a remit that it should support the Rabbit Destruction Council in representations seeking co-operation and more intensive research to develop satisfactory methods of opossum destruction. Legislation making it mandatory for oppossum destruction to be undertaken by rabbit boards., and Government approval for the devaluation of opossuns.
