ELLESMERE SHARK

Species Not Dangerous

The shark caught in Lake Ellesmere was a basking shark which fed on plankton. It was not considered a dangerous species, said a report presented to a meeting of the Canterbury Progress League.

The report, from the league’s irrigation, land development and forestry committee, said information to this -effect had ? been received from the Marine Department.

The Lake Ellesmere Commercial Fishermen’s Association had written saying it was the first i :cord of sharks in the lake for 30 years, the report said. It would seem practicable to put some form of shark net in any permanent culvert outlet of the lake. Dr. I. D. Blair said he had seen a seal in the lake when fishing, and presumably other sea creatures could come into the lake when the outlet was open.

“We might even get a Lake Ellesmere monster as a tourist attraction,” he said.
