MAY COLD AND DULL
Weather Office Summary
Last month was the coldest May since 1959 and the dullest since 1956, says the monthly weather summary from the Meteorological Office at Christchurch Airport. The month was cloudy, cold, and unsettled with frequent southerly or southwesterly winds. Both day and night temperatures were well below average. Although the rainfall was about lin below average there were no settled periods—light or moderate rain failing at frequent intervals. The highest temperature recorded at the airport was 61 degrees on May 15, and in the Botanic Gardens it reached 63 degrees on May 16. There was a 7 degree frost in the Botanic Gardens on May 21 and a 10 degree frost at the airport the same day. There were 108 hours of bright sunshine compared with the average for May of 129 hours. Winds between south and south-west predominated and they were stronger than usual.
