Livestock Figures Released

WELLINGTON, June 3.
The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) today released the latest figures on the increase in livestock in New Zealand.
“The figures were prepared by the most competent authority—the Department of Agriculture, in conjunction with the statistical sections of the producer boards,” he said. Mr Holyoake was commenting on a claim by the president of Waikato Federated Farmers (Mr M. G. Hewitt) that the Prime Minister’s figures were higher than those he had obtained. The figures were accepted by the “most representative of farming organisations”— the Agricultural Production Council—at its meeting on May 10, said Mr Holyoake. The Prime Minister said the estimates of 1966 livestock
numbers, compared with 1965 figures, were:— 1966 (est.) 40.5 m breeding ewes; 59m total sheep; 3.4 m dairy cattle; 1965, 37.2 m, 3.2 m. Increase, 3.3 m, 5.3 m, 162,000. 1966 (est.) 3.9 m beef cattle; 6.9 m. Increase, 250,000, 7.3 m total cattle. 1965, 3.7 m, 412,000,
