Rare Fish
A species of fish never before reported in New Zealand waters has been identified by Mr J. Moreland, of the Dominion Museum from speciments received from Matata, Maketu and the Poor Knights Islands. The fish is Canthigaster callisternus, a rare species which has no common name. It was first found off Lord Howe Island in 1889. Mr A. Hall, assistant conservator of wild life at Rotorua, said the fish was about 10 inches long, with leathery skin, unusually disposed fins; and a birdlike head. —(P.A.)
