Senior Teaching Fellows and Teaching Fellows in the following department:— ANTHROPOLOGY AND SOCIOLOGY CLASSICAL STUDIES ENGLISH GEOGRAPHY HISTORY MODERN LANGUAGES MUSIC ANTHROPOLOGY AND SOCIALOGY: The particular interests of this department are: Social anthropology of Australia and neighbouring areas in Oceania and South-east Asia; general sociology with specific reference to modern Australian society: demography and social-science statistics; urban and industrial sociology. CLASSICAL STUDIES: Applications will be welcomed from candidates qualified to teach one or more of the following subjects: Latin, Greek, Ancient History, Classical Civilisation. ENGLISH: Applications will be welcomed from candidates with special Interests in any field of English language or literature, or in Australian or American literature. GEOGRAPHY: Applications are invited from well qualified geographers with interests in any systematic field, but it is desired particularly to attract persons interested in geomorphology, economic geography (with a preference for a theoretical approach), social geography (especially urban and applied fields), statistical methods, airphoto interpretation. The department offers courses in most systematic fields of geography. Its regional Interests are in Australia-New Zealand. South and South-east Asia. Pacific. Its research facilities include a well equipped physical and biogeographical laboratory, stereotope and scanning stereoscope, calculating machines and access to use of computer. HISTORY: The Interests of this department are: European history 1300 to the present day, British history c. 1400 to the present day. Far Eastern and Southeast Asian history. Australian history, and American history. Applications will be welcomed from perhons whose interests lie in any of these fields. MODERN LANGUAGES: This Is a multi-professorial department which at present has French, German, Japanese, Linguistics, Malay and Indonesian, Russian and Spanish sections. Language laboratories are available for teaching in all languages. FRENCH: Applications are invited from persons with special interests in any field of French studies but preference will be given to candidates specialising in French language or 20th Century literature. Candidates for appointment as Senior Lecturer and Lecturer should hold a higher degree in French (Ph.D., doctorate d'Universite) or the aggregation. JAPANESE: With the appointment of Dr. J. V. Neustupny. of the Oriental Institute in Prague, as the first Professor, courses in Japanese will be instituted from the beginning of 1967, and it is proposed to make an additional appointment in the field of Japanese language. Applicants should preferably be native speakers of Japanese. SPANISH: A first year course was instituted in 1966 and this well be extended to a second year In 1967. MUSIC: This department began teaching in 1966, and aims to foster historical, critical and analytical studies, both undergraduate and post-graduate, of music on a world wide basis, and to seek close integration with various other disciplines; research activities are extending into non-Western as well as European musical cultures. Pass and honours courses leading to the 8.A., rather than B.Mus. studies, are progressively being introduced; composition and per formance, while indirectly encouraged, are not taught. Applicants should therefore have a particular Interest and skill in analysis and musicologlcal techniques, and it is hoped to appoint a Lecturer with special knowledge of music before 1700, musical bibliography and paleography. and the history of music theory, together with a broad extra-musical training as well as a sound musical education at the university level. Previous teaching experience tn a tertiary institution is desirable. and since opportunities for practical music-making exist, applicants should indicate any particular qualifications in this sphere as well. Teaching Fellow, 5A3000 5A3500 p.a. with superannuation provision on the F.S.S.U. basis for appointees of Senior Teaching Fellow status and above. Applicants should state whether they wish to be considered for appointment within the Teaching Fellow/Senlor Fellow grade or the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer grade. In special cases applicants of exceptional qualifications or experience for appointment within the Lecture/ Senior Lecturer grade may be considered for initial appointment at Readership or Associate Profesorship level.
