VERTICAL TAKE-OFF.—The XC-142A tri-service V/STOL (vertical short takeoff and landing) transport aircraft rising vertically from the flight deck of the United States aircraft-carrier Bennington off the Californian coast during preliminary carrier evaluation. It was the first time in American naval history that a transport-type aeroplane capable of flying more than 400 miles an hour in forward flight and taking off and landing vertically had performed the feat.
