Half-Pace Griffith Satisfies Umpire

(X.Z.P.A. Reuter —Copyright)

BRADFORD.

The West Indies fast bowler, C. C. Griffith, who was called for throwing against Lancashire last week, claimed two cheap wickets in an incident-free, half-pace bowling display against Yorkshire at Bradford yesterday.

At the close of the second day’s play, the West Indies were 33 for no wicket in reply to Yorkshire’s 177 for six declared.

Rain washed out the first day’s play and the start yesterday was delayed for an hour. Griffith took two for 17, including the wicket of England's opener. Boycott, who was Yorkshire's top scorer with 40. Spin Greater Threat The off-spinner, L. Gibbs, provided the most persistent threat to the county batsmen and finished with two for 51 off 29 overs. Griffith was watched from square leg by the umpire. Mr I •I. Langridge, but provoked no unfavourable comment in either of his two spells. The other umpire was Mr C. Elliott who will stand in the first England-West Indies test match, beginning at Old Trafford next Thursday. Mr Elliott did not view Griffith’s action from square leg. He stood at the bowler’s end for all of Griffith’s overs. This was Griffith's first match since he was called for throwing by Mr A. Fagg against Lancashire last week.

The West Indies skipper, G. S. Sobers, made a bold decision in sending Yorkshire in to bat after winning the toss. He obviously hoped the damp conditions would help his quick bowlers. Yorkshire made Sober’s gamble look doomed to failure when it put on 43 without loss in the pre-lunch spell. But wickets fell regularly after lunch and the West Indians could feel well satisfield with their performance. ; Scores: YORKSHIRE First Innings |G. Bovcott, c Allan, b Griffith .40 ’K.
