. In short, the doves are talking everywhere and not much is heard from the hawks, although there are still a goodly number about. They are remarkably silent at this stage of events and are scarcely Happing their winga —Low-spirited Washington report on Vietnam.
For quite some Time we’ve heard this Talk, This Argument of Dove and Hawk, Two Birds of one American Feather Who flock, but don’t get on, Together. The Dove prefers that Wars should cease His Partiality’s for Peace At least, he’s willing to explore Any Alternative to War, Which is un-Christian, and expensive, Even when ostensibly Defensive. Both Conscience and the Budget suffer When warlike Policies get Tougher. Doves are convinced that They can do Much better with a well-timed Coo. The Hawk, of ruggeder Constitution, Trusts to a ‘Military Solution.’ No Just Cause ever yet succeeded With one Bomb where a Score were needed Give him the Men, the Guns, the Planes Then make your Peace with What remains. Simple, and ruthless, and sincere At least, that’s how the Hawks APPEAR. Sir, in this Argument of Fowls, There’s little Wisdom from the Owls And many a cackling Goose that walks Now with the Doves, and now the Hawks. Ah, Sir, one Bird’s peculiar Call Reaches my Ears above them all, Let Owls or Doves or Hawks or Geese Make Peace for War, or War for Peace, I’ll hear, re-echoing in Reply, Our Kiwi’s faithful Parrot Cry!
