Builders’ Standards
Sir, —After reading letters, including one today by “Disgusted,” 1 would like to comment. While it is certainly true that much inferior materials and workmanship are evident, it is equally true that Canterbury master builders are doing much to raise the standard of construction to satisfactory levels. There is also a means by which an owner can adequately protect himself: secure the services of a competent clerk of works. Foundations and frame workare vitally important, and once covered, generally reveal faults costly to make good. The services of a retired clerk of works are often available at a nominal sum to ensure attention to important matters of detail and this is a sound investment indeed. Of course, a good specification is a “must.”—Yours, etc. N.Z.I.C.W. May 27, 1966.
