Praise For Local Track Cycling
“The quality of riders competing will be second to none in New Zealand,” said the chairman of the Christchurch Track Cycling Committee (Mr A. N. McFarlane) in his annual report, and this is the basis of his opinion that next season will be very successful.
“In the cash code,” said Mr McFarlane, “all the senior New Zealand champions will been seen in action: and hi the amateurs, we will see an Empire Games representative, Empire Games trialists, and a 1 number of New Zealand championship winners and placegetters.
“The potential shown by some of the younger riders indicates that we have in
Christchurch possible New Zealand champions.
If the public realised how high the standard was of cycling at English Park more people would attend, he said. Mr McFarlane suggested that the incoming committee could give serious consideration to importing a rider for the coming season and also to see if any of the New Zealand Empire Games track team were available after their return from the Games. "It would appear that a feature event, well advertised, does attract the public,” he said. “This was evident on the night W. D. Dalton rode at English Park: and it could well be that in T. J. Tabak we have a rider who could also give the public the type of racing they want to see. “The committee has all the requirements for good meetings: one of the best tracks in the country; plenty of firetclass riders: and an excellent band of willing officials,” he said.
