SWOOP BY POLICE
Bookmaking Racket (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, May 15. . A newly-formed squad of New South Wales detectives has struck at the State’s multi-million dollar “S.P.” (starting price) illegal bookmaking racket. The police claim to have dealt a “mortal blow” to the racket in a night raid on the Sydney “nerve centre” of offcourse S.P. betting on the sixth floor of a building in the centre of the city. The centre, which had 30 telephones, sold information on racecourse betting moves to hundreds of illegal offcourse bookmakers, the police said. The bookmakers paid fees upwards of 40 dollars a race meeting for the service. In addition to throwing the bookmakers into confusion, the police swoop yielded the telephone numbers of the hundreds of "clients.”
