AUTOMATED LINER
First Voyage To N.Z. (N.Z. Prese Association) WELLINGTON, May 15. One of the world’s first ‘ully-automated liners, the 25,000-ton Achille Lauro, reached Wellington this morning at the end of her maiden voyage from Europe. Formerly the Dutch-owned Willem Ruys, the ship is unrecognisable after rebuilding which eost her new owners £10,000,000. All that remains of the former vessel is the hull plating and engines. A sister ship—the Angelina Lauro, formerly the Oranje, made her maiden trip last month. The two vessels, which will re-establish a permanent trans-Tasman service between Wellington and Sydney, are handled and serviced almost entirely by push-button remote control.
