PRIMITIVE CONDITIONS
Govt. Offices In Melbourne (N.Z. Press Association) CANBERRA, May 16. Federal members of Parliament had to put up with rats in the drinking water and “really primitive” toilets in the Melbourne Commonwealth Offices, Parliament was told last week. Mr R. H. Whittorn. a Victorian Liberal, asked the Minister for the Interior, Mr Douglas Anthony, when better accommodation would be provided for Victorian members of Parliament, who used the offices. He said the rats in the drinking water incident occurred last year. However, the toilet conditions were still “really primitive” and the lift kept breaking down. Mr Anthony said he was “very sympathetic” about the matter and that it was the intention that members’ offices should be transferred to the old Melbourne Customs House as soon as the Customs Department moved into their new building.
