A MODERN ENGLISH CATHEDRAL.—The approach to the Cathedral Church of the Holy Spirit, Guildford, the first cathedral to be built on a new site in the south of England since the Middle Ages. Of red brick, the building stands on Stag Hill and commands a magnificent view of the town from its 180ft tower, which is surmounted by an angel weather-vane. Designed by Sir Edward Maufe, the cathedral was begun in 1936 and consecrated in 1961.
