LYTTELTON CONGESTED

Lyttelton is temporarily congested and labour is short. Recently there was a large surplus.

When work began at 7 a.m. yesterday 539 men were engaged but another 231 men would have been needed to man the Holmpark, Pukeko, Titoki and Suffolk all of which were idle.

Labour was supplemented by 22 non-unionists and 27 crew members. In the stream last evening, the Kaimai, Kaimanavla, Waimea and Krebsia, all lay at anchor. The tanker Krebsia, was to berth early this morning. According to the DeputyHarbourmaster (Captain J. Duncan) the port should be busy most of the week. More vessels are due.
