RAPID RISE

West Coast Runner

D. C. McKenzie, a 22-year-old printer in Greymouth, has astonished the athletic community with his meteoric rise. This year he won the New Zealand marathon at only his second attempt in the record time of 2hr 16min 59sec. Earlier in the season he won the Canterbury marathon in 2hr 17min 22sec, and was runner-up to W. D. Baillie in the national 10-mile championship. He is a strong candidate for the Empire Games gold medal, having the ability to run a marathon in a time approaching 2hr lOmin.

McKenzie took up running as a harrier in 1957 and first appeared on the track as a miler in 1959. He ran his first marathon at 19, but had to withdraw after 18 miles. He is self-trained, regularly completing 100 training miles a week.
