Redden Must Show Prowess

The bout between B. Kendall (Christchurch) and R. Redden (Wellington) tomorrow evening at Canterbury Court should result in some excellent, hard boxing.

Kendall, a featherweight, has been chosen in the ‘A’ category to box at the Empire Games. Redden, a bantam-weight, has been selected in the “B” category-—subject to his making a satisfactory showing in trial bouts arranged by the New Zealand Boxing Association.

Redden was nominated for the Games team as a bantamweight but was unable to get an opponent in that weight in the trials held before the boxers were nominated. He is well over the bantam-weight limit and has been seeking a bout against Kendall to show his prowess to the selectors. Kendall, having been nominated after three hard bouts in which he suffered two black eyes, was not prepared to box Redden before the team was selected. -

Redden will have to put up a good showing against Kendall, and Kendall is ready and willing to put Redden in his place, so to speak.

It has been hinted in Wellington circles that Kendall was “dodging” Redden. Kendall is anxious to answer this suggestion most emphatically tomorrow evening. Of the five boxers nominated for the Games, three have been chosen in the “A” category—W. Kini (Auckland). heavy-weight: Kendall, and P. Domney (Wellington), W. Young (Auckland), flyweight, and Redden are in the “B” category. Kini was automatically first choice, having beaten not only the best in New Zealand but also the best in Australia. Kendall won his title convincingly at the national cham-

pionships and, after a win and a loss to B. Cummings (Westport) in the trials beat Cummings convincingly in their third encounter.

Domney scored perhaps the most clear-cut win of any boxer at the national championships when his hard straight lefts stopped the whirlwind hooker F. McGlinchey (Christchurch). In the trials, Domney again gave McGlinchey a boxing lesson.
