‘U.A.R. Can Rely On Soviet Support’
(N Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) PORT SAID, May 16. The United Arab Republic could rely on Soviet support in its struggle against imperialism, the Soviet Prime Minister, Mr Alexei Kosygin, said yesterday.
He said he was impressed by the unity between President Nasser, the Government and the people. With such unity, they would be able to achieve their aims, he told a luncheon held in his honour. President Nasser said
Soviet support to Egypt against imperialism in 1956 encouraged progressive powers to resist colonialism everywhere. “Our Arab region is once more facing an alliance of colonialism and reaction, but the Arab nation will bring their downfall, even by armed struggle”, he said. Mr Kosygin, who is paying an eight-day visit to the U.A.R., ending on Wednesday, toured Port Said before leaving for Cairo by train with President Nasser. The two leaders were greeted by cheering crowds and hooting ships’ sirens when they sailed in this morning from Alexandria ir. President Nasser’s yacht. They visited a museum depicting the history of the Suez Canal, including the 1956 Suez campaign, and toured a dockyard by launch.
