SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
Ph. D. For Mr J. G. H. White
The degree of doctor of philosophy has been conferred by the University of Adelaide on Mr J. G. H. White, a senior lecturer in plant science at Lincoln College.
Dr. White spent two years and a half at the Waite Research Institute of the University of Adelaide from the beginning of 1962 to the middle of 1964 under a Commonwealth scholarship while on leave from the college. He was working on comparative studies in the nodulation and growth of lucerne and subterranean clover. Part of the work related to acid soils, where lucerne is particularly difficult to establish, and some of his findings may have an application in the tussock country of New Zealand, where acid soils are widespread. Dr. White is now following up this work in the Rangitata and Lake Coleridge areas.
An old student of the college, Dr. White completed a master’s degree in soil science in 1955. He spent two years in the Soil Bureau before joining the staff of the college in 1957 as an assistant lecturer. He was promoted to lecturer in 1958, and from April 1 this year has been a senior lecturer in plant science. Dr. White's doctorate was conferred at the University of Adelaide's capping ceremony about two weeks ago.
