Stablemates Win Course Double
The stablemates, Ardleigh and Disband, formed an £lB 18s on-course double combination at Addington Raceway on Saturday. Their wins brought a change of luck to followers of the team of D. G. Jones and J. Grant. Both horses will now go to Forbury Park for the next two weeks, with Ardleigh also booked to start at Gore next Tuesday.
Ardleigh was never further back than third in the Trotters’ Consolation Race. D. C. Watts moved him forward at the straight entrance and he soon took the measure of the pacemaker, Free Globe. He came.on strongly to win by a length from Asia Minor, which received a poor run. Free Globe was a length and a half away, just ahead of the winner’s stablemate, Flying Maiden, Castleton’s Gift and Tronso.
Disband graduated to New Zealand Cup class when she beat the Aucklander, Great Adios, by a head, with a nose to the unlucky Fielder, in the Royal Easter Cup Consolation Race. Disband took the lead with seven furlongs left and although she had missed a lot of work after an accident between the first night and second day of the meeting, she lasted for a narrow win. Great Adios was never far away in about fourth place. He fought on strongly for his placing, his best run of the trip. Fielder came strongly between the first and second horses after being disappointed for openings either on the outer or the inner. Lonesome Valley battled on gamely for fourth a length back after being just behind Great Adios for most of the way. Town Martial, Southern Song and Bellajilly were next. Fine Filiy Lustre Scott gave a dashing display to win the President’s Handicap, for three-year-olds. She beat another promising filly in Nocatchem by half a neck, with Co Pilot coming fast from well back
for third, ahead of Inky Boy, Abbey Frost, Local Star, Goldmount, Finesse and the favourite, Courtier, which wrecked his chance at the start.
Lustre Scott is trained at Halswell by R. T. Court, jun., who races her in partnership with his wife. She is by U. Scott from Bonnie Lustre. Bruce, in the Members’ Handicap, was a second winner by U. Scott on Saturday. R. H. Negus sent Bruce to the front from the start and from then on was not headed, winning easily by three lengths from Happy Songster, which might have been a shade unlucky. Rocky Star was a sound third, ahead of Bright Highland, which made up much ground, Bob Again and Cuddle Doon. Superior Chief, never a danger, finished eighth. Gay Paree gained her third successive win when she beat Don Caesar, Adorato and On Probation in the Monte Carlo Handicap. There was considerable merit In her win as she was forced wide for much of the last mile.
Doug’s Choice gained his fourth win for the season for his Pleasant Point ownertrainer, C. A. C. Wilson, when he beat Friendly Tom by half a head in the Au Revoir Handicap. Loyal Light made up ground for third four lengths away, shading Gold Maru, with Le Whip next.
