University B Clearly The Better Team

UNIVERSITY ■ IT: F. Searle, G Nottage, P. Duncan tries; P. Gaffkin two penalty goals and a conversion. BELFAST U: M. Hooper, I. Ashby tries: R. Innwood a penalty goal and a conversion. Although the Anal points margin was small. University B was clearly the better team. Only in loose play, when the ball was on the ground, could Belfast match its opponents. University B won because Its players were more skilful. On three occasions Belfast should have scored, but ill-timed passing and poor handling lost it the ball with the line open. The game was full of movement but the standard of play seldom rose above mediocrity. Well led by C. R. Hockley, the University B forwards won a major share of possession from the tight play and the tall Gaffikin and G. Meredith dominated the line-outs. University B was not as quick to the loose ball as Belfast, but some good driving play was seen and in this Hockley. P. Duncan and J. Caldwell excelled. R. Sommerville, the University B half-back, was sound on defence and cleared the ball well. The inside backs, I. Owen, G. Nottage and F. Sevele all showed penetration but their handling suffered under close marking. Only the half-back. R. Dee

and the first five-eighths, I. Lewis, impressed of the Belfast backs. R. Inwood played an impressive game. He was the only Belfast forward to dispute the University B line-out supremacy and was also to the fore in the loose. Referee: Mr D. M. Sampson.
