Moors Trial In Second Week

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CHESTER, April 25. Britain’s “bodies on the moors” murder trial entered its second week today—and may end sooner than expected.

On trial are 28-year-old lan Brady and 23-year-old Esther Myra Hindley, charged with the murders of a youth and two children. The prosecution has claimed that all three were subjected to perverted sexual attacks before death. Originally it was estimated that the trial would last about five weeks. But on Friday there were signs of an earlier ending. The first week was taken up mainly with evidence

about the death of Evans, who the Crown’s chief witness, 18-year-old David Smith, alleges he saw lucked and throttled to death by Brady. One sensation of the trial so far was Smith's refusal on Friday to name a newspaper which he admitted had been paying him since last November in connexion with the case. The national Sunday newspaper “News of the World” later announced it was the journal concerned.

Smith admitted he had a “vested interest” in the conviction of Brady and Hindley, his sister-in-law, whose conviction would determine the size of his final lump-sum payment.
